Hotel Holiday Inn – Suschevsky (1 hall)
This roundtable addresses the problems associated with aging and the depiction of these issues in film and television.
Excerpts from the following films participating in this year’s program will be screened: Wrinkles; An Attic Full of Puppets; and finally, two films from Polish cinematographers: Decrescendo and Deep Love.
Taking part in the discussion are British, An Attic Full of Puppets, Angel De La Cruz, one of the writers and the executive producer of Wrinkles; and Tomash Potachek, a protagonist from the movie Decrescendo.
Participants will address a complex issue: how to keep the elderly from withdrawing to the sidelines, quietly living out their years, and instead feeling valued and in demand by younger generations, leading a full and interesting life. Decrescendo.

Meeting with the protagonist of the film «Natasha». Filmmaker Alexey Mikhalev tells the story of a woman who has used a wheelchair her whole life. After decades of solitude, she makes friends, finds love, and gets married, never losing her faith in people.

Master class with the author of the film «I Want to Be Loved». Every teen wants to be loved, especially one just returning home from boarding school. Director Vadim Arapov tells the story of a girl with a hearing impairment who finds love, but long-term happiness was not meant to be.

Master class with Anna Simakova, author and hero of the film I Want a Pair of High Heels. Simakova tells the story of a woman who had been seriously injured in the past and learns to live anew. There are circumstance she had to come to terms with, some of which she accepted, others she tolerated, but there were other little things that became so important, they turned into an impossible dream…

Master class with Tofik Shakhverdiev, the well-known and accomplished Russian director and screenwriter and the winner of many awards, including a “Nika”. Shakhverdiev has made four films about people with disabilities. In the festival program he presents his film «Italian Lessons», about a girl unable to hear and speak, gets around by wheelchair, but effortlessly interacts/communicates with the other hotel guests at the Italian resort.

Master class and meeting with Pavel Rodionov, director of Through Hardship to the Stars. Like his grandfather, Alexey cannot hear but dreams of one day going to space. An engineer by profession, Alexey gets a job at the Gagarin Space Flight Center to be nearer to his goal. Rodionov’s film is about the strength of dreams, which can never be defeated.

Meeting and master class with Iranian Shakhriar Pourseyedian of Iran, who is participating in the festival for the second time. At the 6th film festival his «When a Line of Light Shines» won the award for the best film about love. This time the Iranian cinematographer presents «A Cold Land», about a brother and sister with disabilities who become homeless after a flood. They live in a small camp next to the ruins of their house, but never give up hoping for something better and try to get help from the authorities to rebuild their house.

Meeting and master class with American director Christian von Tippelskirch, who presents at the festival his film «Invitation to Dance». The film is about Simi Linton, a young woman who is injured in a car accident and confronts insidious forms of discrimination she couldn’t have imagined before. «Invitation to Dance» traces Simi’s first reluctant foray onto the dance floor at a party to the present day when dance has become a central theme in her social life, activism, and work.

Meeting and master class with Spanish director Miguel Gallardo. He has brought to the festival the animated film «Maria's Journey» and appears as himself the protagonist in a second movie, «Maria and I». Both films he dedicated to his daughter, who is on the autism spectrum. Moreover, Gallardo is presenting another animated film, «Academy of Specialists», which tells the story about a school where every child is celebrated and encouraged to develop their gifts and talents.

Master class with Sean Cisterna. The Canadian filmmaker has participated in the Breaking Down Barriers Film Festival before. Last time Sean took part in the festival with the feature-length film “Moon Point”. This year he presents the short film “Welcome to Holland”, about a family expecting a baby who learns he has Down syndrome.

Master class with Ray Jacobs. Having already participated previously in the Breaking Down Barriers Film Festival, the British director presents his new film, “Bastion”. Joining him in the master class is James Dulan, a young actor with a developmental disability who plays the leading role in the film.

Master class with Kate Monaghan, director of My Life: Breaking Free. Shown as part of a British television series, this film tells the story of Ruben, Harley and Nicole, three very different twelve year-olds with one very big thing in common. They all have a dream and they won’t let anything stand in the way of it, especially Down syndrome.

Master class with the authors Michael Bernstein and Marina Samokhina and the protagonist Benedikt Lika – Roll and Walk to Russland, a musician and artistic director of a young symphony orchestra. Once the orchestra chose Russia to be the primary theme for their performances. The hero and directors discuss the making of the film and the history of the orchestra.
